Telephone History 1960-1980's

The 1960’s brought different styles and colors of phones and the launch of the first communication satellites. Although there were a few negatives, such as, customer-owned telephones installations and union strikes which disrupted service. The biggest blow to Bell Telephone came in 1970 when the FCC allowed independent companies to install and maintain communication systems for businesses. By 1971, 100 million telephones were in service. In 1974, the government once again filed suit against Bell Telephone to break up the company’s domination in the telephone industry. The suit was not settled until 1983 when under Judge Harold Greene, Bell Telephone was officially broken up into seven smaller companies. Some people argued that the break up would cause a rich field of technological advances and higher service costs, neither materialized. If anything, it created greater competition and advancements continued at unbelievable speed. Above are pictures of telephones over the years.

  1. Telephones have always intrigued me. These advancements over the years have certainly put the “scientists” to hard work. Almost every year there has been small or large advancements in telephones. The artistic designs, colors and shapes have changed from huge boxes to tiny hand-held devices that we all lose from time to time! We can have blue or pink phones! Not only has the technology base of the telephones changed, but the artistic shape and color of them as well. Society has rapidly grasped onto this technological advancement. From first having mainly businesses obtain telephones, to everyone not being able to live without one! The science behind these inventions and transitions absolutely astounds me!

  2. Telephone progression is someone everyone who owns a cell phone should take appreciate. My grandmother, up until about 4 years ago, had a rotary dial phone that took fooooooreeeevvvverrr to dial. Once you dialed one numbe you had to wait for it to return to the top...UGH and the clicking noises. But thier have been many artistic styles for the phone, like the burger phone I saw in the movie Juno or the wild colored phones. Now its all about whose phone can do the most while still being the smallest.

  3. Telecommunications has definitely come a long way from the 1960’s. As our society has moved forward so has our technology and what we expect from telecommunications. Scientists and Engineers have come forward to build and design phones that suit our needs. In the 1960’s the phones went from using cords to cordless technology, then the huge “walkie-talkie” cell phones, to now where we enjoy different features like call waiting, call forwarding, and voicemail; advances in telecommunication have also brought us dial-up internet, high speed internet and more recently wifi. As our society progresses so do our telecommunications. Art has not ceased to influence our phone choices; our phones come in different colors and with different designs; we have become a society that is fixated with our cell phones, the latest Blackberry, I-phone version or the newest application.
